Retreating to the four-walled safety of her bathroom, she slammed the door shut and leaned against it. Several seconds later, she stripped out of her clothes and banged her toes against the shower stall, unable to move fast enough to stand underneath the blessed waterfall of her shower head. She scrubbed until she could’ve sworn her skin bled in several places. Inhaling the intoxicating floral blossom fragrance of her liquid soap, she poured the incredible three-in-one invention through watery strands of her hair, massaging in the lathery goodness and out the stench of her ex-boyfriend. She hummed a few notes of a favorite song until her mother’s voice boomed through her head.

Good for nothing cunt. You little whore. You let the best man walk out of your life. You think you’ll get anyone better?

She smacked her hands over her ears, willing her mother’s voice to fade away and disappear permanently. But her mother’s shrill chattering wouldn’t stop, instead, it grew in intensity.

She threw open the shower curtain and ran to the sink.

“Stop it, stop it! Get out!” She pounded the side of her head with the palm of her hand and leaned over the sink, wheezing, and supporting her upper body weight with both of her hands.

Stupid little whore.

“Stop it, please. You don’t control me.”

You think you can get away from me, you waste of a child.

Lauren lifted her head and stared at herself in the mirror.

Look at yourself, disheveled, dirty. That’s what you are. A dirty little whore.

Tears broke free from her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. She glanced down at the side drawer holding several bottles of sleeping pills she stole from her mom before she left her house. She couldn’t explain why she never threw them out with the trash.

You’ve got nothing to live for.

Her mom was right. What did she have to live for? Now that she left Layla’s Emporium, she was lost, working in a dead end hostess position at a local restaurant that barely paid her bills. At Layla’s, she was rich but now, what did she have besides the worst job in Connecticut? She had Apollo. No. Apollo didn’t love her. She wasn’t good enough. Her mom was right. She was worthless. Lauren opened the drawer and grabbed one of the bottles. She rolled it in the palm of her hand, sharp edges of it catching the light and shining it bright like a star in the night sky.

What are you doing?

This time the voice in her head was not her mom’s.

You can’t stop me. Not this time.

She ran a glass under the tap water and filled it, shutting the faucet off, afterward.

Stupid bitch. Do it.

This last voice was her mom’s, insisting she follow through with ending her life. She stared at the bobbing water within the glass, hesitant to take the necessary steps to complete her final plan.

No! She’s wrong. You are worth it.

Sweet blessed freedom—that’s what the pills represented. She’d be free of problems, drudgery and bills. No more worries
